Requirements

What do you need to do in oder to complete your thesis project?

  1. First of all: fill out the project outline.
  2. Document your work in the lab book on a weekly basis and remember to structure your files in a logical way.
  3. Follow the data structure procedure of the lab. All projects should be structured according to the GIN-Tonic research folder structure. Imaging data should be structured according to the BIDS standard.
  4. Annotate all your codes and have clear README files in your folders in order for others to understand your project as well.
  5. Stage 1 presentation: mandatory after finishing your literature research, 15-20 min. Please use the following presentation template .
  6. Conduct your research according to the project outline defined in the beginning
  7. Stage 2 presentation: this is optional but very helpful to get feedback
  8. Don’t forget to register the thesis officially
  9. Write your thesis
  10. Hand in your thesis
  11. Once again make sure your project is well structured and documented so that everything can be found and understood without your help. Folderstructure should now be accessible under the server.
  12. Stage 3 presentation: Defend your thesis, 20 minutes talk + 10 minutes Q&A, this is mandatory for the final grade
  13. Congratulations you are done 😄

What are project presentations?

Project presentations are held in front of the lab members during the lab weekly meetings. They are helpful way to get feedback and exchange ideas on how to progress with the project.

Stage 1: Planning phase

This happens after finishing your literature research and before running any analysis and or collecting any data. The following points should be covered by the presentation:

  • background/literature review

  • research goal and hypotheses

  • methods, including programms and packages, study design and paradigm The duration should be about 15-20 min

Stage 2: Get feedback

Every student is encouraged to present at any point a progress update. This exercise is useful for you to get feedback from the lab members. The presentation should include:

  • Results: The outcome of your methods section

  • Discussion: Did it work? Were youur hypothesis correct? Yes, why so? No, why not? Try to give a plausible explanation for your observations based on your results, data collected and literature review.

  • What are limitations of your project?

  • What conclusions can be drawn from the results?

Stage 3: Defending your thesis

After handing in your thesis, defend it in a 20 minutes tallk + 10 minuted Q&A

For this talk please use your already prepared project presentation. ive a recap of the literature, your research goals and methods, present the results of your work, disuss them, name potential limitations, and point toward future directions.

Important! By the end of your presetnation you need to explain on one or more slides where your data can be found and how it is structures. Make use of screenshots of your structure.

This talk is mandatory and will count for your final grade.
